Senior Staff Software Engineer, Onboarding and Activation

Gusto is seeking a Staff Product Engineer for their Growth Onboarding team in San Francisco to own and reimagine the signup-to-activation experience for small business owners. In this hybrid role, you will work full-stack and cross-functionally to build proactive AI-driven onboarding solutions, turning net-new 0-to-1 problems into seamless customer journeys.

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including building and shipping customer-facing products at scale
• Product-minded approach starting from the customer problem and key metrics, operating independently across product, design, and data
• Demonstrated ability to move fast, execute with high quality, and iterate rather than waiting for certainty
• Experience applying AI/LLM capabilities to real product problems with good judgment and a habit of using AI tools to work effectively
• Founder mindset featuring high ownership, comfort with ambiguity and greenfield problems, and a bias toward action
• Track record of raising the bar for teams through technical leadership, mentorship, and setting standards
• Strong full-stack fundamentals and versatility to work across the front end, back end, and data
• Ability to work from the San Francisco office on designated hybrid days approximately 2-3 days per week
