Software Engineer, AI Developer Tools

Gusto is hiring a Staff Engineer for the Developer Productivity - AI Developer Tools team in San Francisco, CA. In this hybrid role, you will architect the AI platform that accelerates engineering across the company by building secure, context-aware development lifecycle tools.

• 8+ years of systems expertise navigating complex codebases and delivering production-grade, distributed software
• Production AI experience with prompt engineering, fine-tuning, RAG architectures, and orchestrating multi-agent workflows
• Developer-first mindset focused on internal tool friction, speed, and empowerment
• Strategic execution considering data privacy, security, cost management, and systemic reliability
• Exceptional communication skills to translate AI capabilities into infrastructure strategies and mentor junior engineers
• Ability to work across team boundaries toward a strategic vision
