About the role
Gusto is seeking a seasoned Staff Software Engineer to join the teams behind its AI product platforms across hybrid locations in San Francisco, Denver, and New York. This role involves designing and maintaining evaluation frameworks, building core platform services, scaling massive Ruby/Rails and JavaScript/React applications, and mentoring other engineers.
Key requirements
- 8+ years of software development experience
- Hands-on experience taking AI/LLM capabilities to production, including agent orchestration, tool integration, retrieval, and evaluation/feedback loops
- Fluent, daily use of AI coding assistants across the development lifecycle
- Passion for creating scalable, efficient platforms for users
- Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks
- Experience in or interest working in Ruby on Rails
- Two-day travel to a Gusto office for onboarding
