Staff Software Engineer, Invoicing and Billing

Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the backend teams behind its Invoicing and Billing platform in San Francisco. The role involves designing, building, and scaling high throughput transactional commerce systems that generate accurate invoices and integrate with accounting systems. Team members are expected to actively engage with AI tools and mentor other engineers.

• 8+ years of software development experience
• Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new platform capabilities
• Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks
• Experience in building large high throughput distributed systems
• Experience in the Commerce domain such as invoicing, payment processing, or revenue recognition
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems at scale
• Experience with large scale refactors, performance, and reliability issues
• Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact
• Experience in or interest working in Ruby on Rails
• Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders
• Travel to Gusto's office for onboarding is required

Seasoned backend software engineers with extensive experience in distributed systems, commerce domains, and large-scale applications who enjoy mentoring others and working with AI tools.
