Staff Software Engineer, PEO

Gusto is seeking a Staff Engineer for PEO Growth to own the end-to-end customer onboarding experience for their Professional Employer Organization product. In this hybrid role based in San Francisco, CA, you will drive technical direction, build in a regulated domain, and integrate domains across app teams into a coherent journey. You will also leverage AI tooling in your daily workflow and help build AI-assisted guidance into the onboarding experience.

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including meaningful time owning customer-facing product surfaces in a large production codebase
• Strong full-stack range with comfort in a mature server-side codebase and a modern component-based frontend
• Demonstrated AI fluency with day-to-day use of AI tooling in engineering work
• High ownership in ambiguity with the ability to take fuzzy business needs, shape them, and ship without a perfect spec
• Strong collaborator and influencer across team boundaries with a track record of leveling up engineers
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

An experienced software engineer with a strong full-stack background, a history of high ownership in ambiguous environments, and active fluency in AI tools who wants to lead critical onboarding and growth initiatives for small business products.
