Sales Engineer

Gusto is seeking a customer-facing engineer to work at the intersection of software development, solution architecture, agentic AI, and client delivery. In this role, you will own technical discovery end-to-end, build production-ready agents, and embed directly with clients to simplify payroll, tax, and compliance processes. Your focus will span early-stage qualification and proof-of-concept development to shipping hands-on code that automates manual workflows.

• 5+ years of hands-on experience in a customer-facing technical role such as Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Engineer, AI Engineer, or Solutions Architect
• Demonstrated history of shipping production systems involving REST APIs, webhooks, event-driven systems, auth patterns, data modeling, idempotency, and failure modes
• Experience building agentic workflows beyond prototypes using MCP or function-calling patterns, evaluation, and reliability practices
• Deep technical fluency in highly regulated sectors such as payroll, tax, or compliance
• Proven ability to navigate high ambiguity, perform technical discovery, and turn complex requirements into production-ready agents
• Strong communication skills with experience presenting to both individual engineers and executive sponsors
